Are you going to buy an iPad at $499?

So the new Apple iPad is a big iPod Touch with 9.7 inch screen, what’s most interesting is the you can get Apple iWork on it. For presentations Keynote has the functionality of PowerPoint and looks MUCH better and at $9.99 is a steal. And you’ve got Numbers the Excel replacement for another $9.99 and Pages the Word replacement for $9.99.

There’s a great blog post here from Tadhg Kelly on ethical game design (thanks to Umair Haque for pointing it out).

Tadhg points to the fact that some game design preys on the compulsive behaviours that create addiction. Is your ‘harmless diversion’ more slot machine than meaningful activity? I’m not taking the draconian point of view that meaningless entertainment is bad, I’m asking the question whether or not you know when you are being ensnared and manipulated? To know that you need to be living and acting intentionally rather than sleep walking through your life.

What to do if you are suffering from post Avatar depression

January 13, 2010

I’m fascinated to hear reports in the media of people suffering from post-Avatar depression. I love the film and the sheer beauty of Pandora and the Na’vi culture, and it’s astounding to read of people seeing their own lives as grey and dull by comparison. Clearly they don’t understand that this feeling is not depression [...]

Avatar

December 19, 2009

I’ve just come back from seeing Avatar and it’s a great heroic story as long as you’re on the Indian’s side rather than the cowboys (which you should be anyway).
And yes the special effects set a new level of achievement. I remember being in the cinema for the 2nd Star Wars film and the battle [...]

ALL OF US ARE LIKE THIS 7-YEAR-OLD WHO DOESN’T LIKE HIS STORY-MAKING TO BE INTERRUPTED

December 12, 2009

This is from Dudley Lynch’s blog:

If you haven’t read Dudley’s books Strategy of the Dolphin and Mother of All Minds they’re must reads. Particularly if you like Claire Graves stuff. Dudley’s much better at articulating this than Spiral Dynamics. Anyway here’s Dudley’s blog post:

Is slavery the new green energy?

December 4, 2009

From yesterdays Guardian newspaper: http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/dec/03/cycling-energy-slavery
How many cyclists does it take to make a cup of tea? About 100, if you run your home on pedal power. This is the premise behind The Human Power Station, tonight’s episode of the BBC1 series Bang Goes the Theory, in which an army of cyclists provides the energy used [...]
