Another reply to Tivo, this time not on the MythoSelf list but directly to him. There’s no personal content so I’ve posted it here as you might find it enlightening

When I’m facilitating clients they come up with one story that resonates initially… It’s not a transderivational search, it’s transpersonal. It’s what Campbell said about mythology, they’re describing the indescribable, which is why quite often some clients have difficulty finding the words Others interestingly just have it before you’ve finished asking them… Again I want to add in the warning about what this is not, simply because that is what most people are doing, it’s like most people think being skilful in NLP is being able to do the techniques they’ve learnt… But don’t do the setup, probably because that takes hours not minutes, and so don’t have the art. The art is tickling them so they come sublimely to just have the answer, which makes it look easy thereby hiding the art.

There are no components, it is whole-form. For example you’re breaking what I say up into pieces which changes the meaning. Break up anything and you’ll change it’s meaning. Go back and read the entire sentence then it will make sense, or if it doesn’t read it again. You can’t build it piece by piece. For example, some of the clients I have, have done a lot of NLP. I lead them to have the experience where for them literally anything is possible. They know how to do it, it’s easy for them to do, simple, elegant. Then they go home and start to think about it, try to work it out logically, step by step, so it makes sense. By doing this they fuck it up and can’t do it because it doesn’t make sense logically (or at least using their logic). They call me on the phone, I tell them to stop thinking about it and just do what the fuck I told them to do… If phrased sufficiently like this they actually do it and have the experience again… Then they go away and think about it some more and…..

You need to build the capacity to ‘get it’ whole form. That’s the only way to get it. You don’t understand, you realise.

I posted this to Tivo on the MythoSelf Yahoo group today:

The point of transformation is that everything is different… To be especially clear in saying this, if you can conceptualise who and what you want to be becoming, this is almost certainly not it. As that would just be a rearrangement of the existing stuff, translation rather than transformation.

Joseph Campbell said that myth had one foot in the ordinary world and the other in the transcendent. In that context it’s the bridge or the way of describing/conceptualising what is indescribable.

What people like to do and where they go wrong is choosing stories they like, as the choosing is for what appeals, which is usually what is missing, what they don’t have and think they would like to have… This is delusion… If you stay stuck with that, but if you realise it is merely just the call to adventure, THEN you can take the leap of faith and embark on the journey.

By contrast being facilitated in the MythoSelf process a new way of being is built… From here different stories resonate… You’re not choosing from here. There’s an identification from the way of being… It is fit and match with how you now are. There is no choice, the story just fits.

You don’t integrate, you don’t take the new and soil it with the old. There is no construction. It is: “I am in intent, I’m present/ready” or whatever your description for this way of being is, then from there decide/act. Elegant huh?

So what is success?

According to Donald Trump in his latest book “Think Big and Kick Ass! in Business and Life” it’s all about doing what you love. Trump only sleeps four hours a night ‘cos he can’t wait to get up and start working. This is the key, to love the work you do. And Trump, who as he says “loves sex” says business can be even more satisfying!!

Last night I was at the Richmond NLP group listening to Charles Moore present his introduction to the MythoSelf process. Charles told his story of leaving the world of investment banking and being responsible for bringing in billions of dollars. Charles left to pursue his dream of working for himself, doing the work he loves to do. He spoke about the difference the MythoSelf process has made to his life, going from having loads of money and loads of stress and the resulting medical conditions that the Harley Street doctors could do nothing about, to realising his dreams of health, happiness, love and a family of his own.

Charles now runs not one but three successful businesses doing the work he loves. And I had the privilege of sitting next to his lovely wife Janice and their beautiful two month old daughter Zoe at his presentation last night.

Zoe of course has this all realised already, she’s just in her bliss by default and you can see how this reflects in the people who encounter her.

If you want to find out more about Charles his websites are:

I wrote this to Alex on the MythoSelf list.

As I said in the previous email the MythoSelf process is just not for most people. Most people, and I include myself in this example will go and buy an NLP training and having done that stop there, some people however want more. I did all the NLP training’s that Richard Bandler and his sponsor in the UK Paul McKenna offered. I even did a small group coaching programme with Michael Breen who was then Paul’s business partner. I chose NLP over MythoSelf in 1997 because I couldn’t get an answer of what MythoSelf was and the benefits it offered me.

So having trained with most of the international quality NLP trainers and a significant proportion of the worlds therapeutic geniuses and having met most of the others where do I find my fascination drawing me? MythoSelf. I could recognise what Joseph was offering because I had the experience of a sufficient number of other people as a basis of comparison. So do I regret not choosing to do Mytho when I had the option back then? Absolutely not, I’m who I am because of the journey that I’ve been on. But having been a person who’s been asked for advice as to what NLP training I would recommend by literally thousands of people (I’ve been one of those anonymous people ‘hanging out’ with the well known trainers at countless training’s and events). Now I can’t honestly recommend ANY NLP training. Look, I’m not saying that NLP is not extraordinarily valuable. AND believe it or not I even think Paul McKenna is doing a good thing training the thousands of people he trains. And as for marketing, Paul is doing extraordinary things. His face is literally everywhere, on the sides of buses, big posters at train stations. He’s giving most people what they want, the illusion of a quick fix.

OK, so maybe you’re as Peta Heskell describes them: “A microwave client”, maybe you really can change your life in seven days…

Paul’s book, Change Your Life in Seven Days was a bestseller, and it was in the top three books that get half read and never finished…

So maybe it took them longer to read than seven days….

It’s important to know what your criteria for success are. Is it putting bums on seats, filling the room, making some money then getting them out the door as quickly as possible?

Why are you doing what you are doing? If it is just to make money that gets stale after a while, as Joseph Campbell described it: “People climb the ladder of success only to find they’ve placed it against the wrong wall”. I have very successful people as my clients, barristers, world record holders, truly extraordinary people who’ve realised they’re not getting what they want out of life.

If you’d ever met Joseph Riggio you’d realise what it’s all about.

He embodies what he teaches.

He’s following his bliss, as Joseph Campbell described it, walking a path with heart as Castenada’s teacher don Juan described it.

People show up to the MythoSelf training’s because it’s a truly extraordinary experience. And that’s not for everyone…. Some people want the magic bullet, they’ll happily pay for the illusion if they don’t have to work too hard, if it’s quick, painless and comfortable.

Alex it’s worth pointing out that I’m not part of Applied Behavioural Technologies, I get no referral fees. I mention the training’s because I thought it would be a good idea for someone to. And it’s an opportunity to work at better expressing what I think the MythoSelf process is.

I wrote this to Erik on the MythoSelf list who was asking about ontological and existential longing:

While I can’t answer what Joseph would say, I think of the two terms fairly interchangeably, which is perhaps not as precise as I could be. One of the main reasons clients come to see me is they are experiencing existential longing, so they are not happy with where they currently are in life, they are dissatisfied with their work life or their private life or both. What sums this up for me is the Joseph Campbell quote (or it may have been him quoting someone else) that people climb the ladder of success only to find they have placed it against the wrong wall.

For me and the clients I work with the MythoSelf process satisfies this existential longing. It’s about generating a way of being where you are aligned with what you want to be becoming.

So when you have the way of being, your ontological longing is satisfied. When you know through time what you want to be becoming, or in other words your personal mythology, your existential longing is satisfied.

I’ve also updated my FAQ’s which you may find interesting.

You might like to read my teacher Joseph Riggio’s new book, which is actually his doctoral dissertation from 2005. You can get it is a pdf to download or order as a paperback here: http://www.dissertation.com/book.php?method=ISBN&book=1581123663

The title is: Towards a Theory of Transpersonal Decision-Making in Human-Systems: A Neurolinguistically-Modeled Phenomenography

You can also download the first 25 pages free to see if it’s something you’d like to read.

Here’s the abstract:

Decision-Making gets significant coverage in the business press and as an academic topic in business schools. However, there is a dearth of information on the transpersonal consideration on decision-making and how it effects leaders and leadership in human-systems. Maximizing positive results in human-systems, requires the decision-maker to maintain a constant consideration of both local and non-local elements impacting and being impacted by the decision(s) being made. This book introduces the concept of “Scope of Decision” as a way of arriving at higher quality decisions by considering them from a greater distance from the decision-maker in the time-space continuum. The author designed and used a unique exemplar modeling paradigm to conduct the research, using the proven methodologies of phenomenography and neurolinguistic modeling. This study presented in this book attempts to offer some insight on the transpersonal process of “intentionality” in decision-making, specifically as it applies to making high-quality decisions in human-systems. As stated in the title this study was not intended to be exhaustive, but rather to open new pathways of consideration and knowing in regard to the topic of decision-making. The conclusions arrived at read like a compass pointing to the means for dramatically improving your decision-making, and are best described in the sometimes hauntingly poetic language of the participants as they explore and discover their own processes for what goes into making exquisite decisions.

Yesterdays Guardian newspaper here in the UK has an article about the Ministry of Defences “future strategic context” or their pessimistic ideas for what is going to happen in the next 30 years: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/story/0,,2053020,00.html the part that interested me was the “by 2035 an implantable information chip could be directly wired into the brain”. Clearly they’ve just got around to reading William Gibson’s Neuromancer which came out in 1984. It is also fascinating that many people still think of ‘intelligence’ as being just in the head.

Curiously the 1982 film Bladerunner another significant milestone in the 1980’s Cyberpunk genre seems a better vision, and I don’t mean that we’ll all be replaced by robotic replicants, but then again maybe some people already have been and they just haven’t noticed yet!! The reason why I put the Mytho training’s on my news page is that they give you the opportunity to wake up to a life worth living, to learn how to go beyond the mindless day to day, many of my clients tell me that they want to be more successful. The secret is in the “be”, you need to learn how to “be” before you can “do”. Anyway Bladerunner showed us a vision of a fusion culture of east and west. Recently the Chinese premier Wen Jiabao articulated China’s long term vision of greatness and strategy to achieve national goals in their 100 year vision. You can read more at: http://newsblaze.com/story/20070405223845rahu.nb/newsblaze/OPINIONS/Opinions.html

The other part of how to really be successful is knowing what you want, having the vision or story or mythology in place of where you are going. Again one of the fundamentals of the MythoSelf.

Why is having a vision important, well if you need the reminder here’s JFK’s Rice stadium moon speech in video, audio and text: http://www1.jsc.nasa.gov/er/seh/ricetalk.htm

Choose to have the life you want, your life, a life worth living. Don’t stay behind, move ahead. Be bold before you grow too old… The adventure is waiting. Contact me by email or you can read more about what I do here.

The distinction is between ‘structural’ and ‘functional’ well-formedness. For example some people are functionally well-formed in that in their work life they’re good at making money. In other words they are good at achieving a functional outcome, able to do stuff and get results in the real world. Quite often (but not always) these same people who are good at making money are terrible at having deep meaningful relationships. So you could say they are functionally ill-formed in the area of having deep meaningful relationships. The interesting thing is these same people go ‘I have learnt the skill for making money, so if I can learn that I can learn the skills for having deep meaningful relationships’.

This is the surface consideration, that attracts the idea or ‘modelling’ as most people think of modelling from the NLP context where you’re extracting the ‘strategy’ from the exemplar which you can then replay. This is mostly nonsense as most people are just playing back their hallucination and getting more ill-formed with their delusions.

NLP people are very good with the linguistic stuff and keep quoting that 95% or more of communication is non-verbal. Yet stick within that 5% or less.

The technology of Soma-Semantics™ created by Dr Joseph Riggio and used in the MythoSelf® process uses that other 95%.

So structural well-formedness is what the Mythogenic Self™ process addresses. Addressing the ontology, or the nature of being. So you learn to be how you are when you are at your best. Not best at doing this or doing that, but YOU when you are at your best. So it’s not about doing any particular thing, those are functional considerations. But the point is, this is you, where for you literally anything is possible… This is what I initially work towards with clients, and when they say that as well as indicate it non-verbally then I know they are operating and making decisions from a structurally well-formed position. (BTW this is usually the first session). This is what the Mythogenic Self model does.

As a trained facilitator I then use a different model, the EPC2, or the Exquisite Performance Coaching and Consulting model also created by Dr Joseph Riggio to facilitate functional outcomes than are based on that structurally well-formed position.

The point is the structural well-formedness comes first. You build on strength not foundations of sand. You start where for someone anything is possible and then facilitate from there the functional outcomes. This of course guarantees well-formed or high quality outcomes as NLP uses that term ( for more see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Well-formed_outcome ).

If you’re interested in the EPC2 or Exquisite Performance Coaching and Consulting part. Joseph and Jeff are running that training starting TOMORROW in Tiburon, California. For more see: http://www.mythogenicself.com/Programs/EPC2(tm)_-_Exquisite_Performance_Coaching_and_Consulting.asp

And if you’d like your teenagers to be operating from structurally well-formed positions (rather than continuing to do what doesn’t work for them AND you) there’s the EMPOWERED life for Teens workshop with Jeff Leiken on the 23-25th February, near London. Call Des on 01923 267107 or email him at: desbarry@heropath.co.uk or look at: http://www.heropath.co.uk/ Here’s some of the comments from previous attendees:

“I now know how to be confident in spite of everything going on around me. The confidence and edge this workshop has given me has changed my life.. Jeff is an amazing trainer. What he’ll teach you will make a huge difference in how you make decisions and how you think about life.” Hannah, age 16, Abbots Langley, UK

I wasn’t sure what to expect on Friday night. On Saturday everything started to make sense. By Sunday I left feeling BRILLIANT! I feel everyone should experience this in their life! Sam, age 15, Dublin, Eire.

“I’ve have been doing so much better than I was before the course. Nearly everyone around me has noticed it in some way! Recently I have had to make some serious decisions and being able to be “true to myself” even under tremendous pressure has mattered so much. Chris, age 17, Greystones, Eire

“I have learned more in the last 21/2 days than what I have learned in my A level year so far” Becky, age 17, Dorking , UK

When I came to Exquisite Teens I had no idea what I was getting myself into. There are no words I can use to describe it, so you have to go and experience it for yourself… Just do It!” Colin, Age 16, Greystones, Eire

“We can learn how to walk, speak or play basketball, but who teaches you how to live life the best way you can?…After one of the best experiences in my life, I see my friends, my family, everything that happens around me and even myself in a different way. Problems which I thought were matters of life or death (a quite common adolescent feeling I think) are now simple decisions to me… I have been taught my most valuable lesson. Alys, age 15, Barcelona, Spain,

“After I first found out about the exquisite teens course I thought it would be quite pointless going on it as I did not believe people could change unless they hypnotised you! … I eventually decided to go on the course and I was certainly wrong about not believing you can change! ……. I am so glad I went on this course as it was a life changing weekend with fantastic and inspirational people. I now understand how it is all about achieving more in life and now I am doing just that!”Natanya, age 16, Hemel Hempstead, UK

Wouldn’t you like your teenager to be saying something similar?

You’ve also got multiple opportunities to FIND OUT what the excitement is about and have the MYTHOGENIC SELF EXPERIENCE.
